Andrew is off to Chelsea to get the latest plant news

Monkton Elm's top horticultural expert is off to one of the nation’s biggest and most celebrated flower shows next month (May) to find out about the new plants being launched this season.

Andrew Pitman, who is the Plant Manager at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Taunton and has worked for the garden centre for more than 25 years, is attending the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show from May 20 until 24, 2008.

Andrew said: “I am looking forward to finding out about all the new plants that are being introduced by the growers this year and bringing a few of them back to the garden centre for our customers to see straight after the event.

“It’s very important to keep in touch with the latest gardening ideas and trends. By attending an event like Chelsea I am able to do this and to also pass on any information and tips I have discovered to anyone who visits Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre this season.”

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the ultimate event in the gardening calendar. It sets out the latest gardening trends and features the newest and most desirable gardening products.

After the event, Andrew will be creating a display of new plants and ideas he has uncovered at Chelsea in the garden centre. He will also be hosting a ‘show and tell’ style talk on this year’s show on Saturday, May 31 at 10am in the garden centre’s Four Seasons Restaurant’s new conservatory area.

Andrew added: “While at the show I am also going to catch up with all the exhibitors we know from the area like the herb grower Jekka McVicar so I can report back to our customers on what’s new from some of the South West’s top horticulturalists.”

Tickets for Andrew’s talk on May 31 are on sale from April 26 and are priced £2 each. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the garden centre’s ‘Charity of the Year’, Children’s Hospice South West.

Children's Hospice South West

Children’s Hospice South West opened its first hospice, Little Bridge House in Barnstaple, in 1995. The hospice offers children with a life-limiting or life-threatening conditions respite, relaxation, friendship and a sense of community. Little Bridge House immediately provided support for up to 200 families.

The demands on Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Bridge House increased to the extent that there became a vital need for a second children’s hospice and in April 2007 they opened Charlton Farm near Wraxall, Somerset.

Having another hospice has instantly doubled Children’s Hospice South West’s provision and offers more choice to families so that they can remain close to home or take a complete break away from the area they live.
