Neighbours encouraged to garden together…
NEIGHBOURS living on streets, roads and closes in Taunton are being encouraged to garden together this year (2008) as part of the town’s 2008 ‘Taunton in Bloom’ contest.
A new ‘Best Street Display’ category of the competition, sponsored by Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, has been launched and the garden centre’s Plant Manager, Andrew Pitman is ready to hit the town’s streets to offer free consultations on how to give neighbourhoods a mini ‘blooming’ makeover.
Andrew said: “I’m looking forward to giving residents free tips and advice on maintaining their front gardens even if they simply have a small paved area, and how to create and care for flowering tubs, baskets and troughs so you get the best from them.”
Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, which is located at Monkton Heathfield between Taunton and Bridgwater, also sponsors the allotment section of the ‘Taunton in Bloom’ competition.
General Manager of the garden centre, Norma Moore, who grows her own vegetables on her allotment at Turners in Taunton, explained: “It’s one of our gardening initiatives at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre this year to encourage more people to have a go at growing their own fruit and vegetables.
“We’ve sponsored the allotment section of the ‘Taunton in Bloom’ competition for many years now but this year we’re also offering free help and advice to people who come into the garden centre who may have just recently taken over an allotment or for anyone who wishes to grow their own in their gardens this year.”
The ‘Taunton in Bloom’ competition encourages the community to get involved in ensuring Somerset’s county town is looking at its best throughout the year. Green issues are at the heart of the ‘Taunton in Bloom’ campaign.
Shaun Cregan, Britain in Bloom Co-ordinator for Taunton Deane, said: “I’m very pleased to have Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre on board as a ‘Taunton in Bloom’ competition sponsor.

“I’m looking forward to working with the garden centre. I think Andrew’s offer of visiting residents of streets, roads and closes to give free gardening advice is a good idea. We can all grow plants to the best of our knowledge, however, any help and advice from an expert is always more than welcome.”
Residents of streets, roads and closes in Taunton who would like Andrew to visit them to offer advice on their entry for the ‘Best Street Display’ category of the ‘Taunton in Bloom’ competition, should contact him at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre on 01823 412381.
The ‘Taunton in Bloom’ prize-giving ceremony is being held at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre on Wednesday, October 1 (2008).
