Bridgwater children take part in recycling workshops

CHILDREN from the Bridgwater area took part in recycling workshops with environmental education promoter Mrs Recycle at a Somerset garden centre last Saturday (April 12).

Cathy Karniewicz, who is known professionally as Mrs Recycle, visited Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre at Monkton Heathfield between Taunton and Bridgwater to host recycling workshops where children were invited to create flowers from used plastic bottles and yoghurt pots.

Norma Moore, General Manager at Monkton Elm, said: “Mrs Recycle, who is well-known in the South West for promoting the three Rs - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – at schools and community events, visited the garden centre to host workshops and chat to youngsters about recycling. The event was a huge success and we hope to welcome her to Monkton Elm again soon.”

Children were asked to take along any old bottles, crisp tubes or yoghurt pots to create plastic plants and flowers at the workshops.

Among those taking part (pictured) were Ellie Willward-Roberts, aged five, from North Petherton and sisters Kathryn and Rachel Burton, aged 11 and eight from Westonzoyland.

During the day, there were also displays giving free advice on recycling and reusing resources from Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

To link in with 2008 being the International Year of the Planet, the garden centre is planning a series of free recycling and eco-friendly events during the coming months.

The next one is a Compost Awareness Week and Organic Gardening event from Monday, May 5 until Sunday, May 11, 2008. The event ties in with national Compost Awareness Week.

Norma added: “We take our carbon emissions and the environment very seriously at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre and are keen to develop our environmental policies during the coming year.”
