| Visitors bid to save post office HUNDREDS of visitors have joined the fight to prevent the proposed closure of West Monkton Post Office this month (April 2008). Customers of Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, which is at Monkton Heathfield between Taunton and Bridgwater, have signed a petition to save the site’s nearest post office. The garden centre’s General Manager, Norma Moore said: “Customers feel strongly that the proposed closure of West Monkton Post Office is wrong. “Visitors to the garden centre are keen to sign the petition to prevent the closure of the post office because they believe, as we do, that post offices like this one provide a vital service to the community. “We have had the petition at the garden centre’s reception and on the tills for the last few months. As soon as we heard the news that West Monkton Post Office was proposed for closure, we started the petition.” People have until Wednesday, April 9 to make their views known to Post Office Ltd. about the proposed closure of West Monkton Post Office, which is one of many post offices in Somerset that look set to be closed. Norma added: “As a business we use the village post office and every time we visit it there are always plenty of people in the shop.” West Monkton Post Office has been run for 23 years by Bjarne Nielsen, who originally came from Denmark.  The 59-year-old Sub-Postmaster is hoping his post office will be saved from closure. Bjarne said: “It is getting to the eleventh-hour stage but I’m hoping to be able to carry on as a post office. I want to continue as the Sub-Postmaster for a number of years. “I’m afraid the shop is unviable without the post office. I’m not surprised by the level of support the petition has had at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, I’m pleased customers of the garden centre are so supportive. I think we have a good relationship with the community.” |
