| Veggies made easy…
PEOPLE who want to try growing their own vegetables this year (2008) are being offered the chance to take home a selection of ‘ready to pick’ plants.
Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is stocking a range of vegetable plants to cater for people who don’t have the time to sow seeds and nurture small plants, but would still like to have a go at ‘growing their own’
Jane Earthy, Seasonal Plant Supervisor at the garden centre, which is located at Monkton Heathfield between Taunton and Bridgwater in Somerset, said: “For those people with little spare time we’re stocking a selection of ‘ready to pick’ vegetables, such as aubergines and tomatoes, where most of the work has been done for you.
“Nothing beats the satisfaction and flavour of home-grown vegetables. You know precisely how they have been grown. They are fresh, seasonal and full of nutrients, and won’t have travelled half way around the world.” |

Jane and her team at the garden centre are trying to encourage people to think about ‘food inches’ rather than food miles this year as small changes can make a big difference.
Jane added: “Growing your own produce brings you into contact with the seasons and closer to nature, and helps the whole family understand where their food comes from.
“If you are new to vegetable growing and fancy using some of your garden for food production, choose a sunny area. Try to avoid areas close to trees or hedges, although some shelter from strong winds is a good idea. If your soil is not very good, then consider making raised beds filled with topsoil and compost or rotted manure.”
The garden centre will be offering free tips and advice on growing your own vegetables during its Compost Awareness Week and Organic Gardening event from Monday, May 5 until Sunday, May 11, 2008. The event ties in with national Compost Awareness Week.
